A Forward Looking Economic Plan for Manitoba (Winnipeg)

Guest Speaker: The Honourable Jon Gerrard, Member of the Legislative Assembly for River Heights, Leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party

The Province of Manitoba has a billion dollar deficit, a provincial government which has given up on regional economic development, and a federal government which has focused cutbacks in immigration and in science and innovation in Manitoba.  A new strategy is needed now which will end pandering to traditional interest groups and will focus government spending in areas which can either lead to major savings in government expenditures, or on areas which have large returns on investment to Manitoba, or do both. Jon Gerrard will outline this strategy, and describe why it is an effective way to provide a new and more positive position for our province.

About the Guest:

Jon Gerrard, As the MLA for River Heights and as the Leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party, Dr. Gerrard brings a diverse background to his role.  He obtained a BA in Economics from the University of Saskatchewan, an MD from McGill University and a PhD from the University of Minnesota.  He was head of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg, leading a multidisciplinary team in the care and treatment of Manitoba children with cancer.  He began his political career as the Member of Parliament for Portage-Interlake in 1993, holding the positions as Secretary of State for Science and Technology and Western Economic Diversification, which provided him with opportunities to promote research and technology.  It was a deep concern for the plight of Manitoba children trapped in Child and Family Services and in cycles of deep poverty that influenced his decision to switch to provincial politics in 1999, when he was elected MLA for River Heights.  As a Liberal voice in the Manitoba Legislature, Dr. Gerrard has fought for justice and accountability from both the Conservative and NDP governments for issues affecting Manitobans of all ages, regions and socio-economic levels.  He is also a strong advocate for the environment – for both its protection and its use for innovation.  Dr. Gerrard meets with as many people as he can, and has visited every corner of the province – battling for a better Manitoba.
