Essential Services

The government has signaled that it is passing back to work legislation once again for Air Canada.

I do not understand how jetting people off to sun spots in the March break constitutes essential services.

If the union and management of Air Canada want to drive the company bankrupt once again, that should be their choice.  Someday, all of them should find a real job with a value creating enterprise.

If the government really wants to stop these strikes, they should intervene to halt the payment of management bonuses or the payment of union dues for 12 months after a labour disruption.  A bit of added motivation on each side of the negotiating table may help them to avoid running to the nanny state to solve their problems.

Hey Les – Your suggestion perpetuates the nanny state problem – you’re still advocating intervention.

The best thing the government should do is fully deregulate the airline industry, making Air Canada finally compete for their cash. They could also stop doing stupid things like pander to xenophobes when blocking legitimate airlines from flying in and out of Canada…

I don’t disagree with your 100% solution. Can you call up Steve and get him to do it?

In the meantime, it appears the Calgary boys and girls in Ottawa want to play the intervention game. If they are insistent on going down that path, then my suggestions may have merit.
