I feel compelled to answer your rhetorical question about who will turn out the lights with the ideas of another French writer (French at the end, but he was really Russian), Alexandre Kojeve. Sadly, but appropriately since it is Manitoba, it will be a civil servant standing by the switch. Kojeve, who was a neo-Hegelian scholar, became a French Eurocrat. In his NDP-like worldview, Eurocrats like him were the last and highest expression of being human at the "end of history." A Manitoba Hydro civil servant, no surprise to you --I am sure-- will likely die alone at the switch after having used all available resources preventing others from turning it off.

Nice piece. You are certainly justified to write, "The Tory party replaced him, to be sure, but has been unable to fill his shoes." It takes guts, humility and confidence for a politician to admit it when they have made mistakes and take a new path. It also takes courage to stand up for what is right, even when it is not easy politically. Ralph Klein had those attributes. Virtually none of today's political leaders do, which is why the country and the province wastes billions on useless programs such as "stopping climate change" when real, and important issues, such as Canada's military and, for most provinces, nursing homes, remain dangerously underfunded. Canadians, including conservatives, must speak out against this situation, holding our leaders to account even if it makes their so-called allies inside the various parties uncomfortable. After all, politicians work for us, not the other way around, something Mr. Klein understood and practiced well. I think this point alone made him respected, if not loved, by people from across the political spectrum.

The video you reference is pathetic, and the embarrassment is on them, not Ron Paul. Either the creators do not understand individual liberty or they fear it. Regardless, the best they can do is mock Ron Paul, because during his lengthy legislative career, he has been ideologically consistent, even when that has meant taking stands that were unpopular.

Kudos on this post, Steve.

That future is already here, but one typical Canadian winter without having an EPA-approved "wood-burning appliance" should put a permanent end to that sinful means of keeping warm and drying laundry.

If not quite, the next Canadian winter with skyrocketing property taxes, the addition of "Environmental Liability" insurance premiums and even more punitive water rationing though "pricing signals" could do the trick?
